Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise to strengthen and tone the body’s postural musculature, improving alignment and re-educating normal movement for optimum performance.

Pilates suits all ages and levels of fitness. It has proven to be particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor posture, sports injuries, arthritis, osteoporosis, before and after pregnancy, mental health conditions and stress related illness.

Pilates has been described as a "mind-body conditioning programme" that emphasises the importance of moving from a strong central core of muscles around your pelvis and lower back.

The original Pilates technique was developed by it's founder Joseph Pilates, practicing with his wife Clara throughout his lifetime (1880-1967)

The key principles of the Pilates method are :

Concentration, Centering, Breathing, Isolation, Routine, Precision, Control and Flowing Movement.

Pilates combines the co-ordination contraction of deep abdominal and stability muscles; with arm and leg movements and breathing. With regular exercise Pilates aims to positively change the body and mind.

The APPI & Clinical Pilates

The Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) is an Internationally recognised training institute founded by Physiotherapists in responce to the demand for rehabilitation based Pilates teacher training.

The APPI have taken the strict traditional Pilates repertoire and created clearly defined levels to allow for progression and regression of exercises, for a more safe and individual approach. The grading of exercises ensures correct recruitment of the deep core muscles throughout the exercise. Increased load, balance and flexibility requirements of the exercises are slowly increased so you will become strong, stable and supple.

The APPI have used scientific, evidence-based research to facilitate and devise the programme of exercises which are now successfully being taught to the general public, and in a clinical setting, across 22 countries around the world.
